Old city (Icheri Shahar)
“Icheri Shahar” – the inner city, often dubbed as the “Old city” is located in heart of the capital Baku, enclosed by highrising fortress walls. As an oldest residential area of the city, it is listed as the main historical-architectural reserve of Azerbaijan. Old city occupies about 221 000 square meters, having over 4000 residents. It is widely accepted that the Old City, including its Maiden Tower, date at least to the 12th century, with some researchers contending that construction dates as far back as the 7th century. But historical data shows Icheri Shahar had been densely populated during VII-XI centuries, as strong economy, trade and handicrafts have allowed it to prosper throughout time. It was declared a historical and cultural reserve in 1977, and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maident Tower, in 2000.
