The most majestic and the most mysterious monument of Baku is the Maiden Tower, or Giz Galasi, stands in the south-eastern part of the fortress of Icheri Sheher and has long been considered a symbol of the city. One cannot find any historical building with similar shape or structure either in Iran or ANY OTHER ISLAMIC STATE. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, in 2000. Initially, historians claimed that, the tower was built in 12th century, according to slab with old inscription on it, but later studies revealed the it had been attached hundreds of years later. Some sources indicate , construcion went underway in VI-V B.C. Today the Maiden Tower houses a museum, with modern multimedia display equipment, where various versions on purpose and other details of the tower are visually explained. By visiting Giz Galasi, you can decide for yourself which version is more probable.
